Katrina Sculptures Preservation Project
The Project Management Institute, Mississippi Gulf Coast Chapter (www.pmimgc.org) was chartered in July of 2015. Our founding goals include giving back to the community and demonstrating the value of our universal project management discipline to the diverse Gulf Coast business community. We have consolidated these goals in our first public effort: The Mississippi Gulf Coast Katrina Sculptures Preservation Project.
These sculptures – carvings of storm-damaged trees still rooted in the ground - are at risk from exposure to sun, sea spray, weather, insects, and natural rot. No organized maintenance or preservation programs currently exist.
PMI MGC proposes to apply project management expertise to organize a maintenance and preservation
Plan (Project Plan) to ensure these sculptures remain viable for the foreseeable future. The restoration effort is intended to be performed as a community service by volunteers and the Project Plan will be developed accordingly.
PMI MGC’s project development approach consists of three phases:
- Phase 1 – Define the scope of work and necessary resources to accomplish a restoration. (Completed)
- Phase 2 – Develop a scalable Project Plan to allow a group to organize and execute a restoration effort.
- Phase 3 – Publicize the availability of our Project Plan for sharing with interested parties.
Katrina Sculpture Restoration Project Phase 1 - The objective of PMIMGC Katrina Sculpture Restoration Project Phase 1 was to determine the effort required to restore a sculpture. “Eagle 1”, the 7 foot sculpture located adjacent to the Splash Pad in the northwest corner of the in War Memorial Park in Pass Christian, MS, was selected for learning. Phase 1 was completed in April of 2019 and did yield a better understanding of the task in terms of process, materials, tools, skills, effort and cost. Approximately 60 man-hours of labor were consumed. The City of Pass Christian reimbursed PMIMGC’s cost.
Katrina Sculpture Restoration Project Phase 2 - The objective of Phase 2 is to apply learning from Phase 1 to organize a restoration as a community project by a group of people. The intent is to partition the work by skill set into “work packages” consisting of a 2-day time commitment. This approach will to allow teams of 2-4 people to accomplish the restoration in an incremental series of specific tasks that will limit the number of hours required of any one individual.
